Getting Certified
Anyone looking to pursue a career in plumbing is required by law to become certified by the state of Texas. This helps to ensure that plumbing services meet certain standards. Plumbing can be highly technical at times, and improperly trained workers can cause serious damage. Therefore, it is critical that plumbers earn one of the various certifications provided by Texas State.
To become a plumber, you’ll begin as a trainee, working with a plumber who is already certified as a Journey Level or Specialty Plumber. The work you do under their supervision will supply the required hours you need to become certified.
Plumber Position Options
Depending on your interests, there are a number of certifications you can pursue in plumbing. Becoming a Journey Level Plumber will certify you to work in every single phase of plumbing construction. While this is one of the most intensive certifications, it will make you extremely hirable and allow you to work laterally across the field of plumbing.
If you would prefer to earn a certification in a specific area of plumbing, there are a number of available options. Texas State currently provides certifications for Residential, Pump and Irrigation, Domestic Well, and Backflow. Each of these certifications has their own set of requirements, with some also necessitating additional certifications. Pump and Irrigation, for example, requires an electrical certification in addition to its other prerequisites.
Continuing Education
The plumbing world is always changing as new technological advancements change the way buildings are built. As such, plumbers are required to renew their certifications every few years by taking continuing education classes that must be approved by the state of Texas. The exact number of hours and credits will vary depending on the specific certification, but all aspiring plumbers should be avid learners who have an interest in continually bettering themselves through further education.
