How To Tell If Your HVAC Equipment Has A Good SEER Rating

An inefficient system wastes loads of energy and causes your energy bill to skyrocket! So how do you know if your unit is giving you the most bang for your buck?

SEER

This is the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio of the unit. To determine a particular HVAC unit’s SEER, data is taken during the whole cooling season by recording the constant indoor temperature produced by your unit and dividing that by the outdoor temperature each day. Therefore, the higher the score the more efficient your unit is.

Why Should I Strive For A High SEER Score?

Higher Quality Comfort

Most air conditioners have a score between 13-21, and although the ratio can’t account for every individual condition, a higher rating will more efficiently keep you and your family comfortable during the summer.

A higher SEER often indicates your unit has two beneficial features: A variable-speed blower and a 2-stage variable-speed compressor. Having a variable-speed unit means the unit can change speeds to conserve energy during low-use times without compromising your indoor comfort.

Meanwhile, units with lower SEER ratings usually run on one speed, so their energy usage is the same regardless of how usage level. You can expect a consistent level of comfort with a single speed unit, but the energy-efficiency won’t be as good as a variable speed unit.

Save Money And Resources

We now know that the higher the SEER score is, the more efficiently your unit will operate, but why is that important? Simply put, efficient units are more cost-effective! However, a high SEER score won’t guarantee savings unless you properly care for your AC. If you don’t schedule regular maintenance, your unit will suffer wear and tear over time, needing to work harder to deliver the desired level of comfort. If you aim for a SEER score of 13 or above and perform routine maintenance checks, you will save significantly on your energy bills for years to come!

However, it is important to keep in mind that SEER measures the maximum efficiency of your unit, meaning it doesn’t account for unique conditions that may inhibit efficiency, such as the quality of your ductwork. Remember to maintain all your home comfort systems, as they all work together to keep you and your family comfortable all year long!
