How To Prepare For & Address A Plumbing Emergency

Plumbing emergencies can spell certain trouble for your home. While you’ll obviously need repairs to whatever aspect of the system has failed you, you’re also vulnerable to damages in the area surrounding the incident.

That’s why when you’re faced with a plumbing emergency it’s so important to do what you can to minimize the wreckage as much as possible while you wait for a professional to properly remedy the situation.
Preparing for Emergency Plumbing Repairs While You Wait For Your Plumber’s Arrival

Here are a few things you can do while your plumber is en route:

1. Turn Off Your Water

This should ALWAYS the first step you take in the midst of a plumbing emergency, and you should do it as soon as possible! Turning off the water will ensure that the amount of water damage is reduced significantly because the source has been cut off. If you haven’t already, make sure you familiarize yourself with where your main shut off valve and individual appliance shut off valves are so you can quickly access them in the event of a plumbing emergency.

2. Attempt To Seal Any Visible Leaks

While you wait on professional assistance, it’s a good idea to try and stop any leaks you’ve found. Using tape, dishrags and buckets to contain the situation is something that you can do that won’t make the problem any worse or prevent your plumber from effectively repairing the problem.

3. Turn Off Your Hot Water Heater

Making sure that your water heater is shut off after you’ve turned off your home’s water is a vital step in this process. After your home’s water source has been cut off, the hot water and pressure will continually climb and could lead to the system bursting. If this were to happen, it could lead to even more significant damage to your plumbing system and the rest of your home.

4. Open Up Any Valves Or Outlets On The Exterior Of Your Home

Opening up outdoor valves and spigots will help to make sure that any water that’s still within your home’s plumbing system has a different way to be relieved as opposed to emptying out somewhere inside your home. This is a step that will save you from a lot of damages to your home in the grand scheme of things.

Preparing for Emergency Plumbing Repairs While You Wait For Your Plumber’s Arrival

Taking these measures while you wait for a plumber’s help doesn’t guarantee your home won’t sustain some serious damages, but it will help you lessen the amount of damage quite substantially. And the fewer damages you have, the less time you’ll spend making repairs before your home returns to normal.
