5 Warning Signs Your HVAC May Need Service (Source: Wikipedia Commons)

The HVAC system is one of the most important and hardest-working systems in any home, responsible for keeping us all cool in the summer and toasty through even the roughest Dallas winters.

With all of that in mind, it’s important to take care of your heating and cooling units in order to keep them running at peak efficiency all year long. We recommend having your unit serviced and cleaned at least twice every year, ideally in the spring and autumn, before heavy use kicks in during the summer and winter months.

But how can you tell if something is going wrong between routine maintenance visits? It’s important to know the warning signals so that you can make sure your HVAC system is up to par before disaster strikes. Here are five common signs that your HVAC may need service…

1.) Your Home Seems Excessively Dusty

If you notice a lot of dust or other particles floating in the air, it may be a sign that your furnace filter is clogged or that your ducts are leaking. If the problem persists after you change your filters and seal up your air ducts, it may be a sign that your unit is no longer running at its very best.

And remember, it’s important to change or clean your filters regularly, before you notice a problem. Besides keeping your home feeling crisp and clean, routinely replacing filters can save you big time on cooling and heating costs.

2.) Your Home’s Temperature Seems Inconsistent

Does the temperature change as you move from room to room? Are some spaces significantly warmer than others? It may be time to have a professional perform an inspection to improve your air flow, seal your ducts, and make sure your equipment is otherwise up to snuff.

3.) Your HVAC System is Suddenly Too Loud

Rattling and humming and banging – none of these are good to hear from a central air conditioner or a furnace. Any unusual sounds could indicate a serious mechanical problem with your equipment, ranging from a dislocated fan to a serious clog. Either way, it’s a sure sign that it’s time to call in the pros.

4.) Your Central AC Doesn’t Seem to Be Switching On

If your air conditioner doesn’t seem to be cycling, it’s a sign that there may be a problem with the compressor or your thermostat. If your air conditioner seems to be running but there is only hot air coming from your vents, it may be a sign that your unit needs Freon. In any case, a problematic air conditioner is always a sign that it may be time to have your entire system examined.

5.) Your Heat Pump or AC Unit is More Than 15 Years Old

Generally, the life expectancy of a heat pump or central air conditioner is between 15 and 20 years. If your units are on the older side – say, 10 years or older – it’s important to make sure they get a lot of regular inspection and care.

Or, it may be time to replace your heating or cooling unit with a newer, more energy-efficient model! Not only will a newer model save you the money from all the time and repairs that an older system requires, but its improved efficiency could save you 20% to 40% of your energy costs, according to the Department of Energy.
