3 Plumbing Lessons from TVs and the Movies (Source: Pixabay.com - Used as royalty free image)

Hollywood has always been fascinated with plumbing and plumbers.

Plumbing mishaps – and the grizzled, world-weary handymen who come to the rescue – crop up again and again in the TV shows and movies we watch and love.

And while we like to think we’re nicer (and better looking) than the stereotypical movie plumber, we’ve got to admit that filmmakers and writers do get some things right about plumbing (even if they tend to crank up the drama).

Here are three common plumbing plots we’ve seen onscreen – and what to do if they ever crop up in real life.

Overflowing Washing Machine

A character absentmindedly stuffs their clothes into the washer, then dumps in too much detergent and walks away. We all know what’s about to happen – that machine is going to bubble over and cause all sorts of damage, like it does in this classic scene from Mr. Mom.

And while we don’t see this happening in real life as often as we do onscreen, a leaky washing machine isn’t just fiction; in fact, it’s one of the top 5 appliances in your home most likely to cause flooding. If you notice any leaking coming from your washer, take action immediately: Unplug the machine and turn off the water main right away.

And if you’re too late to prevent a flood, read up on our advice on how to cope with a flooded basement and treat water damage on your wood furniture.

The Tub Falls Through the Ceiling

In the hilarious Tom Hanks comedy The Money Pit, Hanks’ character dumps water into his old-fashioned tub – only to have the basin crash through the floor and shatter on the ground below. It’s not unique to this movie; tubs crash through ceilings on the sitcom Scrubs, and a falling bathtub is even a running gag on Family Guy.

Of course, Hanks could have avoided the issue by having his plumbing inspected before moving into his new place. And if something like this happens in your condo, be sure to read our guide on how to deal with plumbing issues with your condo association. It could be trickier – and a lot less funny – than you’d think!

A Pipe Sprays Water Everywhere

It’s a trope so old school we even found it in this classic Popeye cartoon: A character goes to repair a pipe only to find it spraying water everywhere once they unscrew or loosen it.

In real life, this is no laughing matter. Taking apart your plumbing without a plumber’s expert guidance and supervision could cause big trouble for your system. And, if you remember nothing else about DIY plumbing, remember to find and turn off your water line before you begin any major project. It could save you a lot of hassle – and a faceful of hot water – the next time you replace your faucet or toilet.

Have any plumbing disasters you think we should know about? Set up a DIY rig gone wrong? Lost a ring down a drain like in an episode of Full House?

We’d love to hear your stories – and, more importantly, we’d love to be the ones to help bail you out! For any plumbing or HVAC concerns, large or small, feel free to drop Combat Plumbing a line! Our friendly, experienced team is here and happy to help, day or night.
