Is Your Plumbing Ready for Spring? (Source: Pixabay)

Dallas in the springtime is an absolutely magical place, full of blooming flowers, bright sunshine, and lots of new things to do with friends and family.

With that said, Dallas in the spring is also rainy, windy, and the temperatures are wildly uneven – all of which can wreak havoc on your plumbing systems if you’re not prepared.

Want to really enjoy the season without having to worry about your plumbing? Here’s how to get your plumbing ready for the spring:

1.) Take Good Care of Your Sump Pump

Want to avoid a flooded basement or backed up line during the stormy spring season? Get a jump on the rain by inspecting and maintaining your sump pump. Check for debris or blockages, make sure the piping wasn’t damaged by snow or ice over the winter, and look into purchasing a backup sump pump, which can play a huge role when flooding hits.

Want an easy way to test your sump pump before disaster strikes? Try pouring a few buckets of water into the sump pump pit. The pump should kick on within a matter of seconds. If it doesn’t, your sump pump may be defective – and it may be time to call in the pros.

2.) Check for Damage or Leaks

We had a relatively mild winter last season, but the cold may still have created problems for your system. As we enter the warmer days of spring, check the waterlines that lead to your outdoor spigots for any freezing damage. It also couldn’t hurt to inspect your hose bib, which may have taken a wintry beating, or your gutters, which may be clogged, leading to an unwanted “moat” around your home.

3.) Patch up Holes and Openings

Spring weather means new critters scampering around outside. Keep them outdoors – while preventing unwelcome drafts and leaks – by inspecting your home for any new openings or cracks, particularly around any spigots and near your sump pump line. If you see any openings, caulk them up – before something unwanted finds its way inside.

4.) Get Your System Inspected and Maintained

The spring thaw can lead to water damage if you’re not careful. Hiring a professional, certified plumber to come in and inspect your system at the start of the season – and maybe even make some minor repairs on the spot – can save you a lot of frustration and money down the line.

And don’t forget, spring is also one of the two times of year to get your HVAC serviced! Avoid the looming summer heat by having a pro come in and maintain your system when the weather is still gorgeous.
