Easy Medicine Cabinet Hacks

So your plumbing is running at all-systems-go and your features and fixtures are all replaced and up-to-date. What’s a DIY bathroom master to do next? Why not turn your attention to your medicine cabinet!

Although we tend to take it for granted, a well-organized medicine cabinet is a great way to add a fresh feel and extra storage space to even the smallest of bathrooms.

With our thanks to Good Housekeeping, here are six medicine cabinet hacks sure to help you organize your life and simplify your bathroom routine:

1.) Add a Door Pocket

Think of this handy door lining like a kangaroo’s pouch! Adding pockets to the inside of your door is an easy way to increase your available storage space with little effort. Try keeping sharp or small objects in the door pocket for safe, easy access – and no risk of falling scissors when you open the door!

2.) Add a Chalk Board

If you’re happy with your storage but want a little extra design flourish with function, convert the inside of your medicine cabinet to a chalkboard or whiteboard and use it to jot down your deepest shower thoughts, shopping lists, daily reminders, or messages for your loved ones.

3.) Make Use of Magnets

Magnets can really help you maximize your medicine cabinet. Try using small magnetic strips to hang up small metal objects like tweezers, nail trimmers, or bobby pins, or make use of magnet-backed storage containers to creatively save space while holding items like razor heads, make up, or extra floss.

4.) Create a Cubby and Label System

Isn’t life a little easier when everything stays in its proper place? Make it easier on yourself by creating a labeling system: You’d be surprised how well-labeled buckets, containers, or appliance cubbies can help you keep your cabinet tidy while adding a quirky, personal touch.

5.) Find a New Way to Organize

You don’t need fancy new containers or magnetic strips to stay one step ahead of your clutter. For the less DIY-inclined, try organizing your cabinet strategically, based on how you, personally, use it: Keep the items you use every single day (maybe your hairbrush, floss, and electric toothbrush) on the bottom shelf for easy reach, then work your way up by frequency of use. And who knows? Maybe reorganizing will help you finally recognize and throw away some of the products that you haven’t actually touched in a while (or, you know, ever – here’s looking at you, beard exfoliating cream!).

6.) Add a Lining or Clear Door

Sometimes, adding a new design element will give you the motivation you need to keep your cabinet tidy and orderly. Adding a chic patterned lining to the back of your cabinet will force you to keep your products in place in order to see the design better, while replacing a mirrored door with an open glass front exposes the contents of your medicine cabinet to any visitors in your bathroom, hopefully giving you the push needed to keep it neat and organized.
